The Jonathan Myrick Daniels Pilgrimage
The year 2017 marked the 21st observance of the Jonathan Myrick Daniels Pilgrimage in Hayneville, Alabama. Daniels, whose saint day we commemorate on August 14 in our Episcopal book of saints called Holy Women, Holy Men, was “fatally shot when he took a bullet to prevent the death of 16 year old Ruby Sales.” He had been compelled to respond “to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s call to come to Selma to help black citizens register to vote.” Every year in August after the pilgrimage in Hayneville, the Men of St. Thomas sponsor and coordinate a time of respite at the Church in the Parish Hall for the pilgrims from our sister parishes who travel back to their homes.
